In Full Swing - artoberVA Week 2
The first week of artoberVA flew by so quickly! We forget how fast things move when we’re on artoberVA time, so here are some things to look forward to this week and a couple things you might have missed last week!

10/8: Zine Workshop at the Richmond Public Main Library – “I've never made a zine in my life and there's a Zinefest coming up. It's a new world for me, but seems like a great way to expand my creative side. I'll probably fail at it, but that's what creativity is about, right?”
10/10: 24th Annual Bottimore Lecture: Frederick Douglass's ‘Composite Nation’ 150 Years Later at the University of Richmond – “Douglass argued 150 years that diversity and inclusion makes a nation stronger. It will be great to see how his words compare to our current society.”
Open through 12/7: New Virginians: 1619–2019 & Beyond at the Library of Virginia – “Understanding more about the shifts in cultural diversity in this State are extremely important to creating safe, fun, and earnest spaces for each other. Furthermore, I hope that expanding the knowledge about the immigrant and refugee experience will arm people with tools to enhance fairness and equality in the world around us.”
The first ever Hopewell Arts Fest is happening this week on Thursday, October 10. The Lamb Center for Arts and Healing is partnering together with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to bring their new mobile museum exhibit to Hopewell. Consider making a trip to Hopewell for this evening of free arts programming, performance, and much more. Hopewell is a wonderful community that has a growing passion for arts and we’re thrilled to see this festival happening!
There are lots of exciting events happening this weekend that are also FREE, which means you don’t have to break the bank to explore arts and culture. Click on the event names to learn the details!
Richmond Zine Fest 2019 – On Friday and Saturday, explore the 13th Annual Richmond Zine Fest at the Richmond Public Main Library! This is an open event for all ages with tablers selling zines and other DIY items, informative and fun workshops throughout the afternoon, and good times, food, and conversation!
Waxing Poetic – On Saturday, attend this James River Writer’s Conference poetry reading at the Edgar Allan Poe Museum! Admission to the poetry reading and exhibits at The Edgar Allan Poe Museum (during the time of the reading) is free and open to the public.
Richmond Folk Festival – We can’t forget one of the biggest events during artoberVA! As always, the Folk Festival is free to attend and features a variety of musical talent.

Mayor Levar Stoney is spreading the word about artoberVA! It’s great to see our mayor caring so enthusiastically for arts and culture in the region.
CultureWorks President Scott Garka moderated the Community Foundation’s On Tap: Lifting Up Voices through the Arts panel at the Black History Museum. It was a wonderful discussion and should you be interested, you can read the Community Foundation’s Arts & Culture Impact Report, Fall 2019 here.
Our kick-off at Quirk Hotel was a great success! Being in the heart of the Richmond Arts District on First Fridays, surrounded by folks who are as passionate about arts and culture as we are, was the perfect way to officially launch artoberVA 2019!
And we learned that Juan Conde is a chalk stenciling fiend! We are so thankful for all of the volunteers who are stenciling around our region.
